- The problem of recruitment
- Due to the disapproval of conscription, the British were not able to muster up the same size army as the French
- The pay was substantially low (less than a farm worker) but they were offered food, loot, and a bounty of £40
- They weren't encouraged to marry and settle down which put many men in relationships off joining
- The death rate of the recruits at that time was shockingly high
- The excessive and strict army drills were also a major put off
- Recruits were from mostly poorer backgrounds with many having previous criminal records
- Disease among soldiers caused a high demand for new recruits
- Most men were more attracted to join the militia, which was only supposed to take up 1/5 of the army
- Foreign recruits had to be brought in to fill British absence
