- The Brain
- Cerebrum
- Largest part of the human brain
- Outer top section of the brain
- Divided into 4 lobes
- Associated with higher brain function
- Thought
- Consciousness
- Memory
- Intelligence
- Language
- Pituitary
- Produces many important hormones
- Located at the base of the brain
- Small gland
- Hypothalamus
- Involved in maintaining normal body temperature
- Produces hormones that control the pituitary (gland)
- Cerebellum
- Coordinates voluntary movements
- Speech
- Coordination
- Posture
- Balance
- Coordinates voluntary movements
- Studying Brain Function
- Problems
- Can't be certain that the same results would occur when not in the scanner
- A severely brain damaged person may not be able to give informed consent
- Studying the brains of people who have died relies on donations for research
- fMRI Scanners
- Big tube-like machines
- Show which parts of the brain of the person inside the scanner are activated
- If part of the brain was damaged, the effect it has on the patient can tell us about what the damaged part of the brain does
- Problems
- Medulla
- Controls unconscious activities
- Breathing
- Heart rate
- Digestion
- Located in the brain stem
- Controls unconscious activities
- Treating Problems in the Brain
- E.g.: Injuries to the brain/ spinal cord, tumors, diseases
- Difficult to treat successfully
- If a problem occurs in a part of the CNS that's not easy to access
- E.g.: It's not surgically possible to remove tumors in certain parts of the brain
- Neurones in the CNS don't readily repair themselves
- Scientists haven't developed a way to repair nervous tissue in the CNS
- Treatment may lead to permanent damage
- E.g.: Surgery to remove a brain tumor could leave surrounding areas permanently damaged
- If a problem occurs in a part of the CNS that's not easy to access
- Cerebrum
