  • The Brain
    • Corticol regions
      • Lobes
        • Frontal
          • Reasoning, motor skills, higher level cognition
        • Parietal
          • Processes sensory information (contains somatosensory cortex)
        • Occipital
          • Visual stimuli and information
        • Temporal
          • Interprets sound and language
        • Cerebellum
          • Receives information from the sensory systems and spinal cord
            • Regulates motor movements
          • Coordinates voluntary movement
      • Corpus callosum
        • Allows for communication between the two hemispheres
      • Sulcus
        • A depression or groove in the cerebral cortex. It surrounds a gyrus, creating the folded appearance of the brain
      • Homunculus
        • Distorted representation of the human body, relating to motor or sensory functions
    • Sub-corticol regions
      • Thalamus
        • Relays information to the cerebral cortex
        • Processes sensory information
        • Regulates sleep and wakefulness
      • Hypothalamus
        • Links nervous system to endocrine system via pituitary gland
        • Maintains homeostasis by regulating pH balance, temperature, blood pressure and respiration
        • Secretes neurohormones which stimulate or inhibit secretion of pituitary hormones
    • Brainstem
      • Midbrain
        • Associated with vision, heating, motor control, sleep and wake cycles, alertness and temperature regulation
      • Pons
        • Carries signals from the cerebrum to the medulla, cerebellum and the thalamus
        • Contains nuclei that deal with sleep, respiration, hearing, taste, eye movement, facial expressions and posture
      • Medulla oblongata
        • Controls autonomic function, including respiration, cardiac function, vasodilation and other reflexes
