- Temperatures over 40C - vegetation was tinder dry and extremely low humidity (under 10%)
- Wind speeds of over 125 km/h (80 mph)
- Human activity - power cables can be brought down, producing the spark that sets off a fire
- Impacts
- 450000 ha burned, 3500 structures burned
- Power supplies for 60000 people were cut off
- 11800 head of livestock killed
- 173 deaths, 7000 displaced, looting, cost $4.4 billion
- Large areas of national parks ruined, over 1 million animals perished
- Responses
- Australian gov contributed more than $465 million towards reconstruction and recovery
- Recovery assistance package to address psycho-social, economic, infrastructure and environmental. Assistance provided to individuals, families, communities businesses, primary producers and local gov.
- New fire hazard system would replace the one existing - more accurate predicting, residents advised to lleave on high risk days
