- Causes
- Stalin was scared as he believed people would go to the Western parts of Germany or the ideas would travel over
- The western allies had been recovering the economy by using Marshall aid and there was now a democracy there which was a big contrast to Soviet policies
- 1948 Stalin blocked all routes into West Berlin by land and railway as he wanted to stop people going their and hoped he could own the East and West of Berlin
- Germany had been spilt into four, Berlin controlled by Soviet but allies were allowed to pass through

- Truman was determined to stand up to Soviet Union and show he was serious about communism
- 28 June 1948- AIRLIFT The only way into Berlin was by air so airlifted supplies from Western base
- Lasted for 10 months and no shots were fired by Soviet
- Wes Berlin was supplied with food, oil, cloths and building materials- still great shortages in city and many decided to leave
- Results
- an increased rivalry between the East and West
- confirmed division between Berlin
- Truman viewed it as a victory for containment and proof the USSR could be beat
