- The Behaviourist Perspective
- Assumptions
- Studies only behaviour that can be observed/measured
- Our environment entirely shapes us, all behaviour learnt from it
- Classical Conditioning, Operant Conditioning and Social Learning Theory
- CC= learn through association (NS, UR, US)
- OC = consequences for behaviour will affect if it is repeated --> positive and negative reinforcement and punishment
- SLT = People learn new behaviour through observing the behaviour ofothers (role models) and then imitating it.
- Strengths
- Useful- offer practical ways of changing behaviour
- Scientific- observable behaviour, meaning methods are objective + collect quan data
- Weaknesses
- Reductionist- only focusses on observable behaviour, ignores emotional/social
- Deterministic- don't play a part in choosing own actions + people's behaviour intirely controlled by environment.
- Core Studies
- Bandura
- Chaney
