  • The Battle of Jutland
    • Vice Admirals David Beatty and Franz Hipper began a running artillery duel at fifteen thousand yards in the Skagerrak (Jutland).
      • Hipper's ships took severe pounding but survived, whereas Beatty lost 3 battle cruisers.
    • During the second phase of the battle, Admiral John Jellicoe brought his ships into a 6 mile arc with all of his dreadnoughts end to end which cut the Germans off from their home base.
      • Admiral Reinhard Scheer's ships took 70 direct hits and only scored 20 against Jellicoe.
        • Scheer eschewed future surface encounters with the Grand Fleet because of its “great material superiority”.
        • After huge losses from the British navy, Jellicoe realised the battle was his to lose. He decided no to risk any more ships, and didn't return to face the German Fleet.
        • Winston Churchill noted that Jellicoe was the one man who could have lost the war in an afternoon.
    • Up until 1916, the war had been fought on land but Germany was desperate to break the blockade on its ports.
    • If Germany had won they could have damage Britain’s ability to transport troops, supplies and guns into the main theatre of war in France.
    • By 10:00p.m. British losses amounted to 6,784 men and 111,000 tons. German losses to 3,058 men and 62,000 tons.
