    • Causes
      • After the death of Charles IV there was debate over who the King of France was and should be
        • Under Roman Laws the Crown should have passed through his sister Isabella to her son Edward III, King of England
        • Under Salic Law the throne went to Philip VI, a cousin of Charles IV.
    • The Fighting
      • Edward III laid claim to the throne in 1337 and began an intermittent war that lasted until 1453.
    • Agincourt, October 25th 1415
      • England's most famous medieval victory
      • United a nation and defined 'Englishness'
      • Created a legend and crushed the French
      • The archers were their best asset
      • 8000 Frenchmen died. 100 Englishmen died.
      • They won due to leadership and long bow archers.
      • The slaughter of French noble prisoners meant France was easier to rule
    • Treaty of Troyes 1420
      • Charles VI married his daughter Katherine Volois to Henry V
      • He acknowledge Henry V as his heir thereby disinheriting his own son, Charles VII
      • The English gained vast additional land in France
    • The Role of Burgundy
      • Burgundy was a vassal Duchy of France that had grown so vast and wealthy that it had the power to challenge the French King
      • In 1419, John the Fearless, Duke of Burgundy was murdered while holding a diplomatic meeting with Charles VII
      • His successor Philip the Bold joined/ supported the English in revenge
    • Joan of Arc
      • French peasant girl who had visions of St Michael urging her to support Charles VII's claim to be King of France and to crush the English
      • Inspired the French to liberate Orleans and claim Reims where Charles VII was crowned
      • The French won a famous victory at Patay.
      • Captured by the Burgundians, said to the English and burnt to death for heresy amongst other crimes in Rouen in 1430
    • Treaty of Arras 1435 and the Consequence
      • The Duke of Burgundy made peace with France and recognised Charles VII as the rightful King
        • England was isolated
      • The following year Paris was recaptured by the French in 1442. Pontoise was also surrendered
        • The war was becoming increasingly expensive to fight
