- Thar Desert
- development opportunities
- mining
- has valuable reserves of minerals (e.g gypsum)
- the minerals are used to produce a variety of things from cement to fertilisers
- limestone and marble quarried- used in building and construction
- energy generation
- wind energy
- solar panels produce renewable energy which is used to clean supplies that are contaminated with water (desalinate)
- farming
- irrigation has made growing crops on a large scale viable
- producing crops (e.g wheat/cotton) has created jobs and generated income for the local economy
- mini drainage basins allow rain water to collect for grazing animals
- allows women to play an integral role
- tourism
- jaisalmer- sits on an ancient trading highway between east and west
- important source of income and creates jobs for local people
- tourists explore desert on camels with local guides
- mining
- challenges of development
- extreme temperatures
- temp can exceed 50 degrees in summer: hard to mine, farm or be tour guides as it is too hot- makes development difficult
- water supply
- between 120-240mm of rain falls per year so water must be used sensibly and sustainably
- some parts of desert have experienced over-irrigation meaning the ground has become waterlogged and the excess water dries leaving salt behind- making it difficult to grow crops
- inaccessibility
- desert covers area of 200,00sq km
- extreme environmental conditions and poor infrastructure makes most parts inaccessible
- greater divide between rich and poor as places like jaisalmer are accessible but places beyond this aren't so tourists all go there and boost jaisalmer's economy
- extreme temperatures
- development opportunities
