  • Tensions and Difficulties at the Tehran Conference
    • The Conference
      • Churchill, Stalin, and Roosevelt met for the first time in Tehran in Nov. 1943
        • The tide had began to turn after British success in the Mediteranean and Russian advancement in the East
      • It confirmed the establishment of an European Advisory Committee to discuss post-war Germany, and issued the Declaration of General Security which proposed the UN
      • The United Nations
        • The USSR had importance in the new organization as one of the "policemen" that it didn't have in the League of Nations
      • Poland and the Baltic
        • Agreed to move Poland's West border to the Oder-Neisse River so USSR could keep the Eastern territories (including the Baltic states of Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia)
        • This was significant as Britain had gone to war for Poland's freedom, and was now compromising the country's borders
      • Japan and Turkey
        • Stalin agreed to declare war on Japan at some point (didn't happen due to atomic bomb)
        • Allies agreed to persuade Turkey to enter the war - didn't happen until 1945
      • The Invasion of France
        • Britain and USA agreed to invade France in May 1944, while Stalin launched a major invasion in the east
        • This met Stalin's demand for a second front
    • Winners and Losers
      • Roosevelt had secured Russian support in Japan and got the invasion of France he wanted
      • Stalin had gained Allie's acceptance of his expansion and gained a second front in France. The USSR was also guaranteed a greater role in world politics through the UN
      • Churchill, however, was slighted at the meeting. They were open a second front in France which he was against and had lost prestige by having to compromise on Poland despite going to war for them in 1939
