    • Tectonic Hazards
      • Plate tectonics theory
        • The center of the earth is the core - and inner and an outer core
        • The crust is divided into lots of slabs called tectonic plates
        • Plates are made out of two types of crust - Continental and oceanic
        • The inner core is a ball of solid iron and nickel
        • The outer core is liquid
        • The plates are moving because the rock in the mantle underneath them is moving
        • The places where plates meet are called boundaries or plate margins
      • Earthquakes plate margin
        • Destructive margins - pressure builds up when one plate gets stuck as it is moving down past the other plate into the mantle
        • Constructive margins - pressure builds along cracks within the plates as they move away from eah other
        • Conservative margins - pressure builds up when plates that are grinding past each other get stuck
        • The plates jerk past each other, sending vibrations. The vibrations spread out, from the epicentre
      • Volcanoes plate margins
        • At destructive plate margins the oceanic plate goes under the continental plate because it s more dense
        • At constructive margins the magma rises up into the gap created by plates moving apart, to form a volcanoe
        • Some volcanoes also form over parts of the mantle that are really hot
      • Living close to tectonic hazards
        • Soil around volcanoes is fertile, suitable for growing crops
        • Volcanoes are tourist attractions, working in tourist industry
        • Geothermal energy, generate electricity, power stations
        • Always lived there - means moving from family and friends
        • Government support, rebuild their homes
      • Reducing impact of earhtquakes
        • Prediction - Cracks appearing in rock, strange behavior in animals
        • Buildings - Reinforced concrete, special foundations
        • Planning - Avoid areas at risk, train emergency services
        • Education - How to evacuate, survival kits
        • Aid - Governments sending aid to LICs
      • LICs
        • Poor quality housing
        • Infrastructure, poorer
        • Not enough money for resources
        • Healthcare  is worse, not enough supplies
    • A natural hazard is a naturally occuring event that has the potential to affect peoples lives or property eg. earthquake
    • Earthquakes and volcanoes are tectonic hazards
    • When natural hazards do affect people or their property is it called natural disaster
