  • TB - Primary Infection
    • Infection by droplet inhalation (inhaled & lodges in lungs)
      • Triggers immune response
        • Macrophage engulfs bacteria
          • Lysosome fuses with vacuole
            • Bacterium broken down by lysosymes
              • Granuloma with anaerobic centre forms
                • Bacteria die due to oxygen starvation
                • Bacteria survive, remaining latent / dormant & under control
                  • 'Reactivated' when immune system is weakened
            • Thick waxy cell wall protects bacteria from lysosymes
          • Bacteria produce protein that inhibits fusion of lysosome & vacuole
            • Bacteria proliferates creating a localised infection
              • Thick waxy cell wall protects bacteria from lysosymes
              • 3-8 weeks cell mediated response 'kicks in' - immune cells surround site infection
                • Granuloma with anaerobic centre forms
                  • Bacteria die due to oxygen starvation
                  • Bacteria survive, remaining latent / dormant & under control
                    • 'Reactivated' when immune system is weakened
