- Once implemented, systems need maintenance, from the training of new users to necessary adaptation to meet new user needs

- These can occur when non-anticipated or rare data is encountered by the system or with problems when working with other software
- Security Issues
- There may be a weakness to hackers in the system that wasn't anticipated when it was developed
- This applies particularly to systems operating over a WAN

- Business environment changes
- Changes in taxation or other legislation may require changes to be made to the system once implemented
- Dissatisfaction with hardware or software
- Once in common use, the system may not be performing as expected and so changes to the system may be required
- Even as simple as changing the order of fields for data entry
