  • Systems Maintenance
    • Once implemented, systems need maintenance, from the training of new users to necessary adaptation to meet new user needs
      • Broadly stated, it is "keeping the system running"
    • Types of Maintenance
      • Corrective
        • The system doesn't work as it should do
        • Correcting the system to address problems so that it actually functions as intended
      • Adaptive
        • The needs of the business have changed
        • Adapting the system to meet changing business needs
  • Perfective
    • Looking to perfect the system so that it works as originally intended, but perhaps  a little faster or more user friendly for input and output

    • Systems Maintenance
      • Once implemented, systems need maintenance, from the training of new users to necessary adaptation to meet new user needs
        • Broadly stated, it is "keeping the system running"
    • Identification of errors/bugs
      • These can occur when non-anticipated or rare data is encountered by the system or with problems when working with other software
    • Security Issues
      • There may be a weakness to hackers in the system that wasn't anticipated when it was developed
        • This applies particularly to systems operating over a WAN
    • Business environment changes
      • Changes in taxation or other legislation may require changes to be made to the system once implemented
    • Dissatisfaction with hardware or software
      • Once in common use, the system may not be performing as expected and so changes to the system may be required
        • Even as simple as changing the order of fields for data entry
    • Updating the systems
      • New operating systems are released regularly and other business needs may require you to update, but the system being developed will also need to be compatible
