  • SAM
    • triggered by a sudden, acute stressor
    • hypothalamus stimulates the sympathetic nervous system (activated in situations needing energy and arousal)
    • adrenal medulla is then activated
      • releases adrenaline and noradrenaline into bloodstream
    • this prepares body for FIGHT or FLIGHT
      • pupils dilate to increase alertness
      • increase in blood flow to the muscles
      • increase in hear and respiration rate
      • reduced salivation (mouth dries up)
