    • Piggy's glasses
      • vision and clear thinking, inner wisdom
        • "Put on his flashing glasses" throughout the novel  Piggy shows he is thinking clearly and logically coming up with many ideas to help the boys.
          • He suggests taking a register and the use of the conch.
    • The beast
      • Simon realises its evil within human nature
      • the boys are afraid of the imaginary beast that stands for primal instincts and savagery.
    • the conch
      • symbol of democracy, law and order
        • at the beginning piggy and ralph make a rule that the boys can only speak if they have the conch
          • Jack goes against this and democracy instead wishes to rule instead of Ralph as a dictator
            • eventually the conch is smashed showing the end of decomcracy and order as the boys have decended into savagery
    • the fire
      • symbol of hope and rescue
        • the fire is a literal symbol of hope of rescue as the boys make it in hope for the smoke to be seen and they are rescued
          • In the novel jack and his hunters are supposed to watch the fire but they let it go out showing they have little regard for being rescued
          • eventually the fire has gone out all together and none of the boys try to revive it showing they have little hope of being rescued
        • it symbolises the light and goodness of the boys, when the fire goes out it shows the boys have descended in to savagery
    • the island
      • A microcosm of the real world
        • Golding wrote the novel in 1954 shortly after the end of WWII in 1945, the novel represents this with Ralph as the british and Jack as Adolf Hitler
          • Jack ruled as a dictator against democracy and enjoyed inflicting pain on others as Hitler did.
          • Ralph ruled democratically,he was elected and used the conch he stood for law and order
    • The boys plane damages the island an id referred to as "the scar" suggesting the damage that to come to the boys and the island
