      • symbolizes Ofelia's desire to escape her reality
        • wants to find redemption from the hardships in life
      • represents the complexity of her real life circumstances
      • struggling to find a way out of her reality- everything becomes confusing & overwhelming
      • link between her reality & fantasy
        • uses fantasy/ the labyrinth as a way of escaping the truth of the war & her new life
        • can't seem to find/ see the end when she is always running in circles to escape
    • Rose
      • shows Ofelia is willing to die to find her way to the rose @ the top of the mountain
      • thorns= tasks she must complete in order to become royalty again
      • rose on the mountain= eternal life for those who are willing to sacrifice everything / struggle to overcome difficulties
        • thorns= terrors & horrors of living with Vidal & through the civil war
        • desperate to escape reality
