- Gene - section of DNA on a chromosome that codes (instructions) for 1 specific protein (Smallest)
- Proteins make characteristics
- DNA key words
- Genome - all of an organisms DNA (biggest)
- DNA - carries genetic info (2nd biggest)
- DNA & comparing it to mRNA
- Structure of DNA
- Contains oxyribose
- Polymer (molecule made of many parts bonded together) made of repeating units called nucleotides (monomer)
- Each nucleotide made up of Pentose Sugar Phosphate & 1 base
- mRNA - messenger RNA
- Single stranded not
- Contains ribose not oxyribose
- Contains Uracil (U) not Thymine (T) 4 bases: 1.Uracil (U) 2.Adenine (A) 3.Guanine (G) 4.Cytosine(C)
- Also a polymer of nucleotides but shorter
- Extracting DNA from fruit cells
- 1.) Mash strawberries & put in beaker containing solution of detergent 7 salt, mix well
- Detergent breaks down cell membranes to release DNA
- Salt makes DNA stick together
- 2.) Filter mix to get froth & big insoluble bits of cell out
- 3.) Gently add ice-cold alcohol to filtered mix
- 4.) DNA will come out of solution as not soluble in cold alcohol appears as stringy white precipitate (solid) can be fished out with glass rod
- 1.) Mash strawberries & put in beaker containing solution of detergent 7 salt, mix well
