    • The stimulus that causes stress (e.g exams)
    • Acute stress- SAM pathway
      • Hypathalamus activates the sympathetic branch of the ANS.
        • Neurons released and adrenal medualla is activated which releases adrenaline and noradrenaline
          • Fight or flight. increased alterness, blood pressure, breathing rate etc
    • Chronic stress- HPA pathway
      • The hypathalamus activates the pituitary gland in the brain
        • This causes the release of ACTH hormones, which stimulate the adrenal cortex to release cortico steroids- cortisol
          • Constant supply of energy to muscles but suppressed immune system to conserve energy
