    • Verbal  mnemonics
      • Acronyms
        • A word or sentence is formed from the initial letters of other words.
          • The colours of the rainbow, ROYGBIV= Roy.G.Biv
      • Acrostic
        • Poem or sentence where the first letter in each line or word forms the item to be remembered.
          • My Very Easy Method Just Speeds Up Naming Planets= Mercury, Venus, Earth,Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto.
      • Rhymes
        • Twinkle, Twinkle little star=A,B,C,D,E,F,G.
    • Visual mnemonics
      • Method of loci.
        • Visual method associated with places. It  uses spatial associations between the content one needs to memorize and a familiar location.
          • used to help remember a list of unrelated words.
      • Key-word  method.
        • Used when trying to associate two pieces of information.
          • A key word is used to create a mental image of the information which is  trying to be recalled.
      • Peg word technique
        • Pegwords can be used when numbered or ordered information needs to be remembered.
          • One is a bun ,two is a shoe, three is a tree, four is a door, five is a hive, six is a stick,     seven is heaven, eight is a gate, nine is a line, ten is a hen.
            • To remember that insects have six legs whereas spiders have eight legs, create a picture of insects on sticks and another picture of a spider on a gate.
    • Organisation  and understanding
      • Organising data and/or information    establishes       links which will help recall.
      • Putting things in order- notes in a hierarchy
        • Quicker to retrieve information
    • Encoding and retrieval
      • Encoding specificity     principle:   recall things better if the retrieval context is like the encoding context.
        • Jerabek and Standing(1992): recall of information can be more successful if it is tested in the same room where is it learned. If not possible, imagining  the original learning  environment can help later recall.
    • Chunking
      • 'Chunking' refers to organizing or grouping separate pieces of information together.

    • Active Processing
      • It seems we are more likely to remember materials that have been actively processed.
        • Craik and Lockhart (1975)- memory depends on deep and meaning processing at the point of learning.
          • Suggested enduring memories are created by the processing that you do, rather than just maintenance rehearsal
