  • Storage
    • Definitions
      • BIOS
        • Basic Input Output System. It is part of the operating system which deals with the input and output of the computer.
      • ROM
        • Read Only Memory is a fast permanent memory. When the computer is switched off the data is not lost.
      • Removable Media
        • This is used to store data so that it can be taken away from the computer (CDs).
      • RAM
        • Random Access Memory is a fast temporary memory. When the computer is turned off the data is lost
      • RAID
        • Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks. A system used by networks to keep backups in a set of hard disks.
      • File Compression
        • Reducing the size of a file by converting it to a different format
      • Mirrored Devices
        • Multiple copies of stored data in case the main drive fails.
    • 3.1 Primary and Secondary Storage
      • Primary Storage - in chips inside the computer
      • Secondary Storage - (or backup storage) outside the computer
      • RAM
      • ROM
    • 3.2 The importance of memory size
      • Important because:
        • Applications run faster on their own
        • More applications are able to run at the same time
        • Able to quickly move between applications
    • 3.2 Measuring storage capacity and performance
      • In order to compare different storage methods it is necessary to look at those things that affect the use of the storage device. The following can be used to measure storage capacity and performance:
        • Storage capacity
          • How much data can the storage device / media hold?
        • Storage density
          • How compact is the storage medium? Ideally you want as much storage as possible in the least possible space
        • Access time
          • This is the time the storage device takes to access a particular piece of data.
        • Transfer rate
          • Once the data has been located, it will need to be read and transferred to the computer.
        • Physical size
          • Storage devices need to be as small and light as possible.
        • Portability
          • Some storage devices used for backup should be removable.
