  • Steve Neale's Genre Theory
    • A film and its genre is defined by two things;
      • How much it conforms to a certain genre's stereotypes and conventions.
        • E.g. Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
          • Shows conformation of horror convention as it is set in an abandoned house. This is standard of the genre as it  places the audience in a mysterious and unfamiliar environment.
      • How much it subverts that genre's stereotypes and conventions.
        • E.g. Paranormal Activity.
          • Shows subversion of horror convention as it is set in a regular house. This is uncommon for horror as it is usually a 'spooky' location.
    • He says that a film must conform to these conventions enough that it can still qualify and be identified as a film of that genre.
      • However, a film must subvert these conventions enough that it is still viewed as a unique film, not just a clone.
