  • sports performance in action
    • cardiorespiratory system
      • short term
        • increase heart rate due to the heart having to work harder to pump oxygenated blood around the body
        • increase breathing rate, in order to supply more oxygen to working muscles and remove carbon dioxide
        • increase build-up of lactic acid in the blood
      • long term
        • increase in heart size and strength
        • the heart can pump more blood per beat, so resting heart rate decreases heart becomes more effective and does not need to beat as quickly to supply the body with oxygenated blood
        • decreased risk of hypertension (high blood pressure)
    • musculosketal system
      • short term
        • increase production of synovial fluid for joints lubrication and nourishment
        • increase joint range of movement due to increase of blood flow and increase muscle temperature
        • micro tears in micro fibers, causing the muscle to rebuild itself and become slightly bigger and stronger
      • long term
        • increase in bone density (bone strength) due to increase in calcium production
        • strong connective tissue (ligaments and tendons), so more resistance to injury
        • skeletal muscles adapt to using more oxygen, the muscle and their capillaries become efficient and can therefore work for q long period of time
