- Soft engineering strategies
- Beach nourishment
- sediment locally bought so blends in with existing beach
- the addition of sand/shingle to a beach to make it higher
- Advantages
- increases tourist potential by creating a bigger beach
- fairly cheap and easy to maintain
- Disadvantages
- needs constant maintenance
- Marsh creation
- salt marshes are effective barriers to the sea
- involves allowing low-lying coastal areas to become flooded by the sea becoming salt marshes
- Advantages
- creates a habitat for wildlife
- cheap option compared with maintaining expensive sea defences
- Disadvantages
- land lost as it is flooded by the sea
- farmers/land owners need to be compensated
- Dune regeneration
- Advantages
- maintains a natural environment for wildlife and people
- fairly cheap
- marram grass planted to stabilise dunes and help them develope
- sand dunes are effective but easily damaged and destroyed by trampling
- Disadvantages
- can be damaged by storms
- time consuming to plant marram grass
- Advantages
- Beach nourishment
