  • Soft engineering strategies
    • Beach nourishment
      • sediment locally bought so blends in with existing beach
      • the addition of sand/shingle to a beach to make it higher
      • Advantages
        • increases tourist potential by creating a bigger beach
        • fairly cheap and easy to maintain
      • Disadvantages
        • needs constant maintenance
    • Marsh creation
      • salt marshes are effective barriers to the sea
      • involves allowing low-lying coastal areas to become flooded by the sea becoming salt marshes
      • Advantages
        • creates a habitat for wildlife
        • cheap option compared with maintaining expensive sea defences
      • Disadvantages
        • land lost as it is flooded by the sea
        • farmers/land owners need to be compensated
    • Dune regeneration
      • Advantages
        • maintains a natural environment for wildlife and people
        • fairly cheap
      • marram grass planted to stabilise dunes and help them develope
      • sand dunes are effective but easily damaged and destroyed by trampling
      • Disadvantages
        • can be damaged by storms
        • time consuming to plant marram grass
