    • Reasons for increase
      • Secularisation
        • The church has less influence on people's lives
        • Divorce is now loner seen as sinful of frowned upon
      • Changing Attitudes and stigma
        • Marriage is seen as temporary and not binding
        • Mitchell and Goody-  note there have been rapid changes since 60s- no more stigma
      • Womens increased financial independence
        • Women have jobs so no longer rely on men
          • and there are now benefits available
        • Allan and Crow- the family is not a means for production- so people arent financially obliged

        • Women bear dual burden and triple shift
          • Hoschschild- As many women now have a job, they have less time for emotional work. This causes tension in family.
          • Bernard- women are dissatisfied with patriachal side of marriage

        • Equalisation in the law: It is cheaper, and grounds are equalised and widened
      • Rising expectations of marriage
        • People are falling out of love- marriage should bind to people for ever
          • Fletcher- Divorce is ok if this isnt fulfilled.
    • What are the changes?
      • Rise in divorce since 1960s
        • 35% women petitioned for divorce, compared to 65% now who petition.
        • There is also a decrease in marriage.
    • What do sociolists think is the meaning?
      • New right
        • Divorce is damaging to society, and undermines nuclear family
        • Divorce increases strain on welfare state- more single parents
      • Feminists
        • Divorce is good- shows women are breaking free from opression
      • Postmodernists and individualism
        • Individuals have more freedom- this creates greater diversity
      • Functionalists
        • Divorce isnt a threat to society, it is neither good or bad
      • Interactionalists
        • the meanings are different for everyone- for some its good and for some its bad
