- Refers to your social status and how close to the bottom or top that you rank
- Social stratification - individuals ranked in terms of their perceived value to society
- Still in society women often hold a lower social position than men
- For example in jobs, you expect a boss to be a man, with his assistant a female
- Where have they stemmed from?
- Apes - men fight each other, the women take care of children
- Could have stemmed from Adam and Eve
- Greek medical - womb floats around female body so women are irrational and incapable of ruling themselves
- the word 'hysterical' comes from this - so if you are acting hysterically you are acting like a woman
