- North had a growing population of immigrants
- Growth of industry in the North, increased internal and foreign trade
- Improvements of travel methods, canal, river and road lead to growth in range of industries, engineering and textiles.
- The south despite having 35% of the population only produced 10% of the nations manufactured goods in 1860
- The south produced mainly tobacco and rice, slaves were essential to harvesting
- Code of honour was still of importance in the South, but far less important in the North
- Cultural differences were accentuated by education, Northerners were often more educated than the south and were more willing to accept new ideas and reform
- Many Southern states and democrats from the south were anxious to prevent a president introducing legislation which may affect their interests- wanted to ensure states kept the power to legislate themselves rather than the federal government
- Northerners were less hostile towards the growth in federal power and resented individual state power
- The south wanted slavery for Economic, Social and Political reasons, the ownership of slaves became a measure of wealth
- It was a measure of social control it kept African-Americans in their place and ensured White Supremacy

- 14th Amendment- Guaranteed citizenship
- 15th Amendment- right to vote
- Black codes- restrictive laws to limit the freedoms of African Americans
- Couldn't marry a white person
- KKK- 1873 power exemplified by the Colfax Massacre, 150 black men murdered by white southerners
- 2 Black senators, 20 black house representatives, very little influence
- Jim Crow laws, seen as 2nd class citizens
- 1873- fall in cotton prices affects sharecroppers
