- smart targets
- time bound
- does the goal have an end point? personal exercise programmes last 6 weeks because the goal is set to be achieved in 6 weeks. short term(2-3 weeks) medium term (a season) long term (years)
- measurable
- should be easy to see if a goal has been achieved. running an extra 100m in a cooper run is clearly measurable.
- achievable
- unachievable goals result in demotivation. running an extra 100m in the cooper run after 6 weeks training, is achievable. running a 26 mile marathon after jogging 4,6 miles isn't.
- specific
- knowing exactly what the goal is. "I want to be fitter" is good but not specific. "I want to run 100m further in my cooper run test" is specific.
- realistic
- a goal may be achievable In theory but is it realistic. " I want to get stronger biceps by being able to curl an extra 2kg after 2 weeks of training." this may be achievable but if the gym isn't open at suitable times, then it might not be realistic
- time bound
