  • Skeletal system
    • FUNCTIONS
      • Protection
        • ribs protect heart & lungs - cranium protects brain - vertebral column protects spinal cord, pelvic gridle protects abdomen
      • Support
        • holds vital organs in place
      • Movement
        • muscles pulls on bone
        • wide range of movement - lots of joints
      • Blood Production
        • red & white blood cells produced in bone marrow
        • white blood cells fight infection
      • Shape
        • needs a framework - allows to achieve good posture
    • JOINT TYPES
      • FIXED (no movement)
        • cranium
      • SLIGHTLY MOVEABLE (pad of cartilage between them)
        • between ribs & Sternum
      • SYNOVIAL (freely moveable)
        • allow variety of movement - e.g. hinge
    • BODY SYSTEMS
      • JOINT CAPSULE
        • outer sleeve preventing leackage of fluid
      • SYNOVIAL MEMBRANE
        • lines capsule & makes synovial fluid
      • SYNOVIAL FLUID
        • lubricates joint so bones move more easily
      • HYALINE CARTILAGE
        • covers ends of bones to stop knocking together
      • LIGAMENTS
        • holds bones together and keeps joints stable
