- Differences
- General Assembly gained more power due to issues with the veto
- Security council did not have to be unanimous however all 5 members had to agree
- Scope of UN intended to be wider than LON's - particularly economic, social and human rights' issues
- UN decisions no longer had to be unanimous
- UN had much wider membership, in particular USA and USSR
- Similarities
- Based on concept of Collective Security
- Member states working together to confront aggression by any countries to ensure future peace & security
- US president played major role in establishment for both organisations
- Both reliant on forces of member states
- Both emerged after major wars
- UN maintained some organisations established by LON (ILO + ICOJ)
- Their basic aims and objectives
- Stated in Covenant for LON, in Charter for UN
- Al member states represented in General Assembly
- Real power held by security council in UN (China, France, USA, USSR and Britain)
