- The election of representatives to a legislature from constituencies throughout the country
- In 2015, the Conservatives won the election with 331 seats

- What is dealignment?
- A trend or process where a large portion of the electorate abandons its previous partisan affiliation without developing a new one to replace it
- Some people believe that 2008 possibly is a realigning election with a long lasting impact
- Define proportional representation
- It is any electoral system that apportions seats in the legislature in close proportion to the popular vote cast for each party e.g. 20% of votes=20% of seats
- A more proportional system would give minority parties and independant candidates a better chance of getting into parliament
- Define tactical voting
- It occurs in elections with two or more candidates, when a voter supports another candidate more strongly than his or her sincere preference in order to prevent an undesirable outcome
- When supporters from minor party candidate vote for their favourite major party candidate, based on the impression that the minor party candidate is unlikely to win
