  • Sexual Ethics: Religious Perspective
    • Pre-marital sex
      • NT: undermines the sacredness of your body "For this is the will of God...that you abstain from fornication" - Paul
        • OT: sex is something shared to unite a married couple, not for physical pleasure "a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh"
        • NT: "your body is a temple" we do not control our body, it is God's - pre marital sex defies this
      • RC Church: "The sexual act may take place exclusively within marriage...outside marriage it always constitutes a grave sin" - Catechism
      • Evangelical Christian: chastity before marriage is promoted e.g. 'The Silver Ring thing' campaign in the USA
      • Liberal Protestant: "You should test the milk before you buy the cow" Archbishop of York.
    • Adultery
      • OT: "You shall not commit adultery" 10 Commandments
      • "If a man is found lying with the wife of another man, both of them shall die" - adultery = a sin
        • NT: Jesus and the adulterous woman - shows forgiveness more her sin
          • NT: "everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent as already committed adultery in his heart"
      • Aquinas: 'conflict with right reason' even though the act is natural, it goes against right reason of marriage
    • Promiscuity (sexual activity between two unmarried people)
      • The New Testament, Paul: "flee from sexual immorality" as it undermines the purity + value of your body
        • "I warn you...those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God" - Paul
          • introduced idea that sex was once uncontaminated, but because of original sin it is passed on through generations - Jesus was 'free from sin' - birth by Virgin Mary
      • Natural Moral Law: sex for pleasure (using contraception) does not fulfil the primary precept 'to procreate'
        • + does not maintain order in society
      • Situation Ethics: based on agape not eros - so guidelines unclear? Relativism (4 Presuppositions) each situation is individual
        • promiscuity may be more hedonistic not positivistic (willingly bringing about agape love)
    • Same-sex relationships
      • Aquinas: Summa Theologica argues acts 'with a person of the same sex' are morally wrong
        • Because they cannot lead to reproduction - NML, 5 primary precepts - it is contrary to the will of God
          • Westboro Baptist Church: "God hates ****"
      • Emphasis on homosexual ACTS being immoral: "If a man has sexual relations with a man...both of them have done what is detestable" "It is an abomination" OT
        • COE: the Lesbian and Gay Christian movement believes human sexuality is a gift from God and should be honoured
        • "Homosexuality and The Bible" Bob Fyall - sexual orientation may not be a choice, but the act is - solution lies in loving relationships that exclude sexual acts
          • RC Church: the act is wrong, so homosexuals should lead lives of chastity
            • Lesier - if the purpose of sex is reproduction then a marriage between elderly or infertile couples must also be a sin
    • Contraception
      • Christian Church: 'unnatural'  therefore 'immoral' because it does not service the considered purpose of sex; reproduction
      • OT: "God blessed them...Be fruitful and multiply"
        • OT: "Behold children are a heritage from the LORD"
