  • Sexual and Gender Identity
    • Double Standards
      • Sexual Morality - Boys boast about their exploits but a girl can be called a '****'
      • Lees (1993) found that sexual conquests are approve of and given status by male peers and ignored by male teachers but girls are given negative labels
      • A way of justifying male power and devaluing women - social control
    • Verbal Abuse
      • "Rich Vocabulary of Abuse" is a way in which gender dominance and sexual identities are formed
      • Parker (1996) found that boys are labeled gay because they have female friends, this is a way of reinforcing gender norms
    • Male Peer Groups
      • Use verbal abuse to reinforce masculinity, e.g. boys that do well at school are accused of being effeminate
      • Mac and Ghail's study (1994) looks at how peer groups reproduce a range of masculine class based identities e.g. the working class "macho lad" are dismissive of working class boys who work hard.
    • Teacher and Discipline
      • Boys are told off for behaving like girls and tease them for gaining lower marks in a test
      • They also ignore boys verbal abuse of girls and often blame girls for attracting it
      • Askew and Ross (1988) show how teachers often reinforce stereotypes with their behaviours
    • The Male Gaze
      • There is also a visual aspect to the way pupils control each others identities
      • Mach an Ghail refer to this as the male gaze, the way male pupils and teachers look girls up an down seeing them as sexual objects
    • Female Peer Groups
      • Working class girls gain symbolic capital from peers and they construct a **** Nike appearance, this comes with the risk of being called a tramp if they don't
      • Ringrose (2013) found that 13-14 year old working class girls thought that being popular is crucial
      • as girls transition between friendship and dating they faced tension with - Idealised Feminine Identity (being loyal to friends) and Sexualized Identity (competing for boys)
      • Boffin identity girls want to be successful educationally but may feel the need to compete in to the left yet lack interests in popularity, so they refer to other girls as 'chavs'
