- 6.6A: Renewable and recyclable energy sources
- Nuclear- recyclable energy, as little Uranium is needed to produce energy through fission
- It has a low carbon footprint, effiicent, the tech is becoming more affordable
- However, large scale disasters do occur, radioactive waste is difficult to get rid of, and there is a general lack of public support
- Wind- wind drives large turbines and generators that produce electricity
- Low running costs and can be used all year round
- Impact on wildlife and they are weather dependent
- Solar- panels convert sun's energy into electricity
- The costs of setting these up is decreasing rapidly, and there is large potential for desert areas
- However, they are not efficient (15-20%) and effectiveness depends on climate and times of year and day
- UK's energy mix
- UK gov is very mindful of the need to be energy secure and reduce carbon emissions
- There has been a shift away from reliance on fossil fuels, but it still provides 80%
- We are consuming less than 1970 despite pop increase, and are becoming more efficient in our energy use
- We are developing a nuclear station, Hinkley Point C, which will provide 7% of electricity
- Solar power is growing rapidly, up by 86% between 2014-2015
- Nuclear- recyclable energy, as little Uranium is needed to produce energy through fission
