  • Sebastian and Hernandez-Gil (2012)
    • Aim - to investigate the development of the phonological loop in children aged 5 and 17 years old.
    • Procedure - 570 Spanish volunteers, independent measures, digit span test, random sequence of digits read aloud by experimenter at 1 digit per second. Gradually increased in length by 1 digit per sequence. Asked to recall in the same order.
    • Results - digit span increased with age. Digit span rises steadily until around 11 years old then slows. 5 year olds had the lowest digit span, 3.76. 17 year olds had the highest, 5.91. Elderly people's digit span was similar to children aged 7, suggesting that old age limits digit span. FVFTD and AD patients digit span similar to 6 year olds. Phonological loop capacity is affected by age rather than dementia.
    • Conclusion - digit span increases from 5 to 17 years old in Spanish population. English data had digit span increasing to 15, Spanish was to 17. Could be to do with language - word length effect and recall processes.
