    • Alex III adopted Pobedonostsev's creed of 'Autocracy, Orthodoxy and Nationality'.
      • This meant Russificiation; the enforcing of Russia language on culture of other ethnic minorities in the empire.
    • Russian declared as first language, so all trials and local govt spoke in it.
      • Public office closed to those who did not speak fluent Russian.
    • Following the orthodox Church was encouraged.
      • 37,000 Lutherans converted to Orthodoxy.
      • Catholic monasteries closed down. Non-orthodox churches could not build new places of worship.
    • Any resistance to Russification was suppressed using the military.
      • Nationalities which suffered the most were: Poles, Finns, Baltic Germans and Ukrainians.
      • It intended to unite the country but instead created a national feeling for some non-Russians leading them to join opposition groups.
    • Anti-Semitism was enforced in society.
      • About 5 million Jews, most living in West Russia.
      • Jewish pogroms did little to reduce violence.
      • Many Jews ***** or murdered, and their property destroyed.
      • Alex III passed many laws to restrict the rights of Jews which forced them to live in certain districts of ghettos.
      • Many emigrated or were expelled and some like Trotsky and Martov were driven to join revolutionary groups.
