  • Romanian orphan studies
    • Effects of institutionalisation
      • Disinhibited attachment: child equally friendly to caregivers and strangers
      • Damage to intellectual development: mental retardation if adopted after 6 months old
    • Rutter et al
      • Procedure
        • Researchers followed group of 165 Romanian orphans who experienced poor conditions before being adopted to Britain
        • Longitudinal study testing extent to which good care can make up for poor early experiences
          • Physical, cognitive and emotional development assessed at age 4, 6, 11 and 15 years
        • Study followed control group of 52 adopted British children
      • Findings
        • Half the orphans showed mental retardation when they came to UK
          • At age 11, recovery rates were related to age of adoption
            • Those adopted before six months had a mean IQ of 102 (around average)
            • Those adopted between six months and two years had mean IQ of 86
            • Those adopted after two years had mean IQ of 77
        • Frequency of disinhibited attachment related to age of adoption
          • Apparent in children adopted after six months old: clinginess, attention-seeking and indiscriminate affection to strangers
          • Disinhibited attachment rare in children adopted before 6 months
        • Findings support view of sensitive period in development of attachments - 6 months
    • Zeanah et al (2005): Bucharest Early Intervention Project
      • Procedure
        • Used ** to assess attachment in 95 children aged 12-31 months in institutional care
        • Compared with control group of 50 children who never experienced institutional care
