  • Roles of Lipids
    • Energy reserves in plants and animals.
      • Contain more C-H bonds than carbohydrates so yield twice as much energy as the same mass of carbohydrate.
    • Insulator against heat loss.
      • When stored under the skin.
    • Protection
      • Fat surrounds internal organs such as kidneys and the heart
    • Waterproofing
      • Fats are insoluble in water.
      • Important in organisms like insects where the waxy cuticle cuts down water loss. The same on leaves to reduce transpiration
    • Metabolic water
      • Triglycerides produce metabolic water when oxidised.
      • Important in desert animals such as the kangaroo rat which survives off metabolic water from its fat intake.
