      • Granite
        • Granite: A coarse-grained rock which is hard and impermeable. It is used for roads and steps as it doesn't wear away easily.
    • Rocks can be soft
      • Chalk

      • Do not allow water to soak through
        • Marble or slate
          • Slate: a hard, impermeable rock which splits easily into thin sheets.A good rock for roof tiling.
          • Marble: an attractive and colourful rock which can be cut and polished. Can be used for floor or wall tiles.
    • Soils
      • A mixture of tiny particles of rocks, dead plants and animals, air and water.
      • Sandy soil: a pale colour with lots of small air gaps. Water drains through easily, so feels dry.
      • Clay soil: orange or blue colour sticky soil with very few air gaps. Water does not drain through easily and the puddles stay on top of the clay soil for a long time.
      • Chalky soil: a light brown soil where water drains through quickly.
      • Peat: different as it did not contain any rock particles. It is made from very old decayed plants and is dark, crumbly  but rich in nutrients.
