- Granite: A coarse-grained rock which is hard and impermeable. It is used for roads and steps as it doesn't wear away easily.

- A mixture of tiny particles of rocks, dead plants and animals, air and water.
- Sandy soil: a pale colour with lots of small air gaps. Water drains through easily, so feels dry.
- Clay soil: orange or blue colour sticky soil with very few air gaps. Water does not drain through easily and the puddles stay on top of the clay soil for a long time.
- Chalky soil: a light brown soil where water drains through quickly.
- Peat: different as it did not contain any rock particles. It is made from very old decayed plants and is dark, crumbly but rich in nutrients.
