  • River Management: Hard Engineering
    • Dam Construction
      • Built along course of river to control discharge. Water is held back by the dam and released in a controlled way.
      • Water usually stored in resevoir behind dam. Can be used for hydroelectric power.
      • Very expensive.
      • Sediment often trapped behind wall of dam, causing further erosion downstream.
      • Settlements/ agricultural land may be lost when the river valley is flooded to form a reservoir.
    • River Engineering
      • River may be widened / deepened to carry more water. May be straightened so water can travel faster.
      • Channel of course can also be altered, diverting floodwaters away from settlements.
      • Altering the river channel may lead to greater risk of flooding downstream, as the water is carried there faster.
