  • River Flood Defences
    • Soft Engineering - not a man made construction, designed to reduce the effects of flooding, working with natural processes.
      • Negatives - people don't see it, don't feel safe. Often ineffective, Doesn't prevent flooding, therefore property and possessions are damaged.
      • Positives- Works and helps improve environmental habitats. Cheaper than hard engineerin Examples - Forecasts and Warnings, Land-use management (zoning), Wetland & bank conservation, River restoration.g, more sustainable?
      • Examples - Forecasts and Warnings, Land-use management (zoning), Wetland & bank conservation, River restoration.
    • Hard Engineering - man made construction, designed to prevent flooding where it is built, works against natural processes.
      • Negatives - Expensive to build & maintain, eyesore (unattractive), long lead time ( to build), prevents flooding only where built, pushing flood downstream.
      • Positives - Often more effective than soft engineering, people feel safe, dam's can generate hydroelectric power (sustainable)
      • Examples-  Dams & Reservoirs, River straightening, build up of levees, diversion spillways.
