  • Right Realism
    • Right realists see crime as a damaging act which destroys communities
    • Right realists have been very influential in the UK and USA, Wilson being an adviser to Regan
    • Corresponds closely with neo-conservative governments, wanting to provide a solution for crime
      • This led to a shift in official thinking looking at practical controls of crime.
    • A focus on punishment and not rehabilitation, labelling theory is too sympathetic.
    • Causes of crime
      • Rational choice theory
        • Ron Clarke says its a rational choice if the perceived rewards of the crime outweigh the consequences the offender will commit.
      • Biological differences
        • Wilson and Hernstein say that aggression and low intelligence are biologically determined and means some people are more likely to commit crime than others.
      • Inadequate socialisation
        • Charles Murray says there is an underclass failing to socialise their children properly. It's increasing due to welfare dependency.
    • Tackling crime
      • Environmental crime prevention
        • Target hardening
      • Wilson and Kelling's broken windows theory
        • This is a zero tolerance approach and it involves cutting down on as many small street crimes as possible, such as vandalism etc
        • The idea is by creating a nice environment the public aren't tempted to commit street crimes like their neighbours
      • Jock Young suggests this theory is a myth. Looking at New York in the 1980s crime was decreasing anyway, before enforcing zero-policy
