    • The Act introduced protective import duties in Germany, which stopped free trade
    • POLITICAL results
      • At this point, Bismarck had fully allied himself with the Conservatives
        • This was because the Act splintered the National Liberals
      • PROBLEMS within the National Liberals
        • People who still believed in free trade & parliamentary govt BROKE AWAY
          • Instead they united with the PROGRESSIVES to form a new RADICAL party in 1884
      • Although there were National Liberals who remained LOYAL to Bismarck, he was no longer dependent on them
    • ECONOMIC results
      • Protective tariffs consolidated the work of UNIFICATION by drawing the NORTH & SOUTH GERMANY closer together
      • This ACCELERATED the growth of a large INTERNAL MARKET
      • Tariffs did serve to PROTECT German jobs
    • SUCCESSES
      • The THREAT of the National Liberals ended
      • ACCELERATED the growth of a large internal market
      • UNTIED the NORTH & SOUTH Germany closer together
      • Tariffs protected German jos
      • LIVING STANDARDS did not suffer
    • FAILURES
      • A new RADICAL PARTY was formed which was a threat to Bismarck
      • HIGHER BREAD PIRCES
      • The CENTRE Party & the NATIONAL LIBERALS were determined to FUSTRATE Bismarck's attempt to make the GOVT less dependent on the states & the Reichstag
      • Bismarck FAILED to secure the FINANCIAL INDEPENDENCE
      • Less trade meant less variety
