    • Fold Mountains
      • Andes: Destructive plate boundaries. 65 million years old. Longest range of young fold mountains. 7000km long, 300km width, 4000m height. Used for farming, mining, hydroelectric power, tourism.
    • Earthquakes
      • Haiti: 12th January 2010 at 4:53pm. 7.0 magnitude. 220,000 people died. 300,000 people injured. 8 hospitals collapsed. 2 million left without food. USA sent $100 million in aid. Damaged port and road prevented immediate aid.
      • Christchurch: 7.1 magnitude. September 2010 at 4:35am. Lasted 40 seconds. 2 people were injured by a falling chimney and flying glass. Only 1 person died from a heart attack. 16 ambulances operational within half an hour.
    • Volcanoes
      • Yellowstone: 25,000 cubic meters of magma. Millions of deaths. can cause toxic rain from the volcanic ash. lava flow can destroy settlements and clear areas of agriculture and woodland. Ash and lava provides nutrients to the soil. heat inside the earth can provide geothermal energy.
      • Monserrat: Atlantic and Caribbean plate boundaries. 19 people died. Half of the island became uninhabitable. Population fell from 12,000 to 3,500. British government spent over £200 million in aid. Little Bay is developed as Montserrat's new capital.
    • Tsunamis
      • Indian ocean: earthquake of a 5.9 magnitude in the sea. 13 countries effected. 26th December 2004. 300,000 people died. $7 billion donate. UK donated £330 million. America was monitoring the earthquake but when they realised that it triggered a tsunami, there was not much time to warn the countries. Food provided to more than 1.3 million.
      • Tsunami warning system- warning sent to the countries if there is a tsunami threat. Restoring mangroves- mangroves act as a natural barrier-absorbing wave power. Many mangrove areas have been cleared for hotels.
