  • Research Methods Part 2
    • Self Reports (Closed Questions)
      • Strengths; produces quantitative data which makes it more reliable and replicable, easily presented in a graph or table
      • Weaknesses; lacks any meaning or insight which reduces the validity, data may not be valid as they are forced to pick the closest answer they think if right, social desirability
    • Self Reports (Open Questions)
      • Strengths; collects qualitative data which provides insight, tell us exactly how a person feels about something/a topic which increases the validity
      • Weaknesses; difficult to analyse and make comparisons which reduces the reliability as each response will be different, data may not be valid as they may give socially desirable answers
    • Structured Interview
      • Weaknesses; they are not flexible. lack detail as mainly close questions are asked
      • Strengths; very replicable as you have a list of pre-determined questions
    • Semi-Structured Interview
      • Strengths; flexible, collects both quantitative and qualitative data
      • Weaknesses; difficult to compare answers
    • Unstructured Interview
      • Weaknesses; harder to analyse and compare qualitative data, harder to replicate which decreases the reliability
      • Strengths; very flexible, generate qualitative data which gives more insight,  increased validity as you get a deeper understanding of why they gave the answer that they did
