- Background
- means Rebirth
- took place in Western Europe 1400-1600
- There was interest in how the human body worked (observation+dissection).
- In MA artists focused on religion, but now they drew the body accurately for medical books.
- artists went to dissections of corpses e.g. Leonardo DaVinci.
- New technology
- Mechanical pumps, microscopes, and gun powder (cannons).
- Da VInci drew flying machines/submarines
- Printing press invented- books no longer handwritten (less mistakes) & could be spread over Europe.
- weakening power of church- believed natural causes.
- Andreas Vesalius (Anatomy)
- studied anatomy & became professor of surgery+anatomy at Padua.
- did his own dissections & wrote books by using accurate diagrams.
- "On The Fabric of the Human Body" (1543) was his most popular book.
- spotted Galen's mistakes e.g. No holes in the septum of the heart + jaw bone isn't made up of 2 bones.
- He encouraged doctors to do own dissections & test Galen's ideas before believing them.
- Ambroise Pare (Surgery)
- Apprenticed his brother (barber surgeon) & became a battlefield surgeon.
- In battle, he ran out of boiling oil used for gunshot wounds.
- He made a Roman ointment of roses, turpentine + egg yolk.
- Developed ligatures to seal wounds instead of cauterising iron.
- thought ligatures were sent by god + the threads could carry infection into wound.
- carried out experiment to prove bezoar stone isn't a treatment for position (Galen's idea).
- Wrote "Notes on surgery" + became the kings surgeon.
- William Harvey (circulation of blood)
- discovers how the heart pumps blood like a water pump- recirculating blood.
- identifies difference between arteries + veins.
- becomes king's doctor- ideas are influential .
- writes "An anatomical account of the motion of the heart and blood" to spread ideas.
- Blood letting continues as people are unsure, but in 1901 blood groups are discovered=blood transfusions.
- Public health
- wars happened so resources were destroyed.
- populations increased cities putting strain on clean water supplies+sewage systems
