- Trends
- As people grow older they grow an attachment with religion.
- Belief in God is lowest among those under 34 and highest among those over 65.
- More than half of Brtitish young people do not see themselves as religious at all.
- Why?
- Disengagement- As people get older the become detached from the integrating mechanisms of society. Participation in religious groups provide support and a network of people to relate to.
- Religious Socialisation: Older people have had a greater emphasis on religion through the education system and family, as they grow older they are more likely to rediscover religion if they are not already religious.
- Ill health and death: Older people tend to be faced with declining health and death- religion can provide comfort, meaning and support.
- The ageing effect: Voas and Crockett- people turn to religion as they get older. As we approach death we naturally become more concerned about spiritual matters and the afterlife, these concerns are answered through religion.
- The Generational effect: Society becomes more secular, each new generation is less religious than the one before.
