    • Aim; To offer alternative viewpoint on Zimbardo's work on how tryanny emerges.It focused on group identity and inequality
    • Sample; consisted of 15 males from a larger pool of applicant responding to a newspaper advert
    • Method: It can be considered on some levels to be laboratory experiment and can also be seen as experimental case study. It uses experimental techniques and consistes of controlled covert observation.
    • matched pairs design as it matched participants on personality variables and then each participant from each group were randomly assigned to a "guard" group while the other two participats   into the "prisoner" group
    • Independant variable; Permeabilty of roles. Legitmacy of roles. Congitive alternatives
    • Procedure;The Guards were briefed in a hotel on the night the study began. They were take to the "prison", the following morning in a blacked out van where they were given further instructions. The prisoners arrived one at time and were given basic uniform and had their heads shaved. The prisoners were place in three-bedded cells that were lockable
    • Planned interventions Day 3- the promotion of prisoner to guard          Day 5- all prisoners were informed of the arbitrariness of their roles Day 6- Trade unionist brought in Day 8- study terminated two days early
    • Dependant Variables; Social Variable Organisational Variable Clinical Variables
    • Results- the guards failed to unite and failed to fully act upon thier role as guard. Many guards expressed discomfort at the inequality the role gave them. The prisoners developed a stronger sense of identity but only on day 3 when the possibilty of promotion was removed
    • Conclusion; people don't always conform to stereotypes and groups with power don't always become tryannical
