- Definition: When a vacancy is filled by someone who is an existing employee of the business
- Advantages
- 1. Cheaper and quicker to recruit people.
- 2. People are already familiar with the business and how it operates.
- 3. Business already knows the strengths and weaknesses of candidates (employees)
- Disadvantages
- 1. Limits the number of potential applicants
- 2. No new ideas can be introduced from outside.
- 3. May cause resentment amongst candidates not appointed.
- Advantages

- Definition: When a vacancy is filled by someone who is not and existing employee in the business.
- Advantages
- 1. Outside people bring in new ideas.
- 2. Larger pool of workers from which to find the best candidates
- 3. People have a wider range of experience.
- Disadvantages
- 1. Longer process
- 3. Selection process may not be effective enough to reveal the best candidates.
- 2. More expensive due to advertising and interviews.
