      • Definition: When a vacancy is filled by someone who is an existing employee of the business
        • Advantages
          • 1. Cheaper and quicker to recruit people.
          • 2. People are already familiar with the business and how it operates.
          • 3. Business already knows the strengths and weaknesses of candidates (employees)
        • Disadvantages
          • 1. Limits the number of potential applicants
          • 2. No new ideas can be introduced from outside.
          • 3. May cause resentment amongst candidates not appointed.
    • External
      • Definition: When a vacancy is filled by someone who is not and existing employee in the business.
        • Advantages
          • 1. Outside people bring in new ideas.
          • 2. Larger pool of workers from which to find the best candidates
          • 3. People have a wider range of experience.
        • Disadvantages
          • 1. Longer process
          • 3. Selection process may not be effective enough to reveal the best candidates.
          • 2. More expensive due to advertising and interviews.
