  • Reasons for the increase in population of individuals with learning disabilities
    • Definition of learning disability has widened leading to increased numbers being diagnosed, increasing the numbers of service users with learning disabilities
    • There have been improvements in ante-natal and post-natal care/screening/specialist equipment, leading to increased survivial rates at birth of babies with complex disabilities and pre-term babesi. this leads to increasing numbers of children being born or diagnosed with a learning disability
    • There is also increased life expectancy amongst older adults with learning disabilities, due to improved lifestyle choices e.g. diet and exercise, therefore contributing to an increase in this service user group
    • Improvements in health and social care services have also increased life expectancy of indiviudals with a learning disability as they receive support required to meet thier individual medical and social care needs
    • Increased understanding and research into conditions has led to increased in referral and diagnosis e.g. better understanding of ASD leading to official diagnosis of learning disabilities
    • As numbers of people living with learning disabilities has increased and societal awareness of issues faced by this group has improved, this has reduced the stigma associated with having a learning disability. Therefore, more people are willing to come forward for diagnosis, treatment and support, further increasing statistics for this group
    • There has also been greater recognition of the impact of learning disabilities on individuals and their families. This has led to increased awareness and training for professionals such as GPs and teachers e.g. autism training. Consequently, they are making more referrals for diagnosis, increasing statistics of those living with learning disabilities
    • There has been greater availability of funding from government or voluntary agencies to support individuals with learning disabilities. this has led to an increase in diagnosis so that available funding can be utilised
