    • 1) Cultural changes
      • The 60's were a major period for film and music, which influenced the mindset of the young generation at the time.
        • Massive figures like the world renowned boxer Mohammed Ali had strong opinions against the war and even refused to draft in. Other massive figures were Elvis Presley and John Lennon.
      • Questioned why they couldn't co-exist with people of different races, countries, religions etc.
    • 2) Media
      • The abuse was shown to the world, uncensored
        • My Lai Massacre in 1968 (march 16) where there was a mass murder of south Vietnamese civilians by US troops.
          • Sparked riots and outrage in cities and universities
        • Vietnam war was called "television war" as media showed the reality of war, away from the depiction America showed their public.
          • Around 52 million tv sets were available in Us homes in the 1960's, which was around 90% of all households
    • 3) Spending
      • US spent $168 billion over their nearly 2 decade long fight.
        • Spent $111 billion on military operation and $28.5 billion on aid to South Vietnam.
      • Students wished that money was spent on healthcare and education for the people.
        • Along with students, religious groups, civil rights organizations and some Vietnam veterans turned against the war
    • 4) Lives lost
      • Students were against the draft system due to it being unfair with the minimum age required to draft into the war (average age was 21 compared to the US average for 26
      • US tactics like mass bombings and chemical weapons like Agent Orange, killed/injured many Vietnamese
        • Over 2 million Vietnamese people died.
